The Role of Resin in Ballistic Protection
Modern ballistic plates are made of hundreds of sheets of ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) fibers bound together by resin under pressure. This bonding process ensures that the plate can absorb and distribute the energy from a very fast projectile. In response to China’s environmental policies aimed at reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions, Chinese manufacturers have shifted from solvent-based to water-based resins in the manufacturing of ballistic plates.
Water-based resins are prone to absorbing moisture and are far less resistant to heat than traditional solvent-based resins. Over time, the water-based resin degrades, weakening the plate’s structure and compromising its ballistic capabilities.
